Have finally appropriated my parents' old imac. Unfortunately, I haven't really engaged in any hardcore Mac use since OS 7 or so, so I'm a wee bit lost.
Okay, most of your applications are going to be accessible through the dock at the bottom of your screen; shove your mouse down until it appears. Click on the icon to open the prgram. To put a new icon on, go to the applications folder and drag the icon onto the dock. You mostly only want to do this with the apps you use most.
Everything will automatically save into your Documents folder (double-click on your hard drive and look at the side of the window that opens); you can create subfolders in there, or create them any other place you want, really, including the desktop. iTunes will put your MP3s into the Music folder.
Click on the Apple in the top lefthand corner and choose About This Mac. It'll open a window and give you a button for More Information. Click that to open the system profiler, which should give you all the info you need.
Oh, and if you look at the bottom of any window you open (double-click on the hard drive), it might list the hard drive space available (again, it does this on my version).
Oy. Wow. Sounds as old as my old Bondi Blue, and I've got the first ones that rolled off the line. Of course, I ran that on on 9.2, which doesn't eat as much of the processor.
If at all possible, you want to update that OS; 10.2 at least. It should be easy enough to scrounge up. The early (10.0) versions were seriously slow, and weird in some odd ways. 10.3 or even 10.4 would be good, but 10.2's where things got stable.
Let me know if you need more details or information or whatever.
The upgrade to 10.1 is free but not downloadable; I probably have the 10.1 update disc around here somewhere. You're better off going to 10.2 or later (10.4 is current) though.
Compared to PCs, I don't know crap about Macs, but I'd be happy to come over and take a look at it. I could use the practice and I do have some OSX clue.

More RAM is probably a really good idea, too.
