(no subject)

People *do* realize that, prior to 1967, the Gaza Strip was part of Egypt, right?

*sigh*

[identity profile] asciikitty.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
people tend not to pay attention to the parts of history that don't support their thesis, you know?

I hear ya though.

[identity profile] asciikitty.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
No problem. I wouldn't swear to you that this is an issue that you and I totally agree on, but I do know that most people only know a little of the relavent history. I don't think I know enough of it to have an informed opinion, and I've done a lot of reading.

[identity profile] arib.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
There's probably a good chunk of stuff we don't agree on, but I think we're probably both more informed than the general populace around here.

[identity profile] asciikitty.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
these are both true statements.

The best part? Because of how much I know, I know how much I don't know, and therefore wish to know more.

:)

*hugs*

*hug*

Fun, isn't it?

[identity profile] asciikitty.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah. when I don't think about it too hard, at least.

[identity profile] goldsquare.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Does that matter? To anyone?

[identity profile] arib.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
IMO, it probably should.

[identity profile] goldsquare.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I, quite seriously, hold the contrary view.

[identity profile] goldsquare.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, nah, dude. You are supposed to start a conversation.... Like "history matters more than recent events" so I can say "the redress of ancient grievances done to others does more harm than good". And then we can talk about it.

By the way, your Great-Grandfather punched my Great-Grandfather in 1922. I'm coming for you... :-)

[identity profile] arib.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I would start a discussion about it, but I'm fighting off a cold and recovering from a fast, so my brain isn't quite what it usually is.

and your great-grandfather had it coming! :-)

[identity profile] goldsquare.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry to hear you don't feel well. Eat something!

Great-Grandpa sure was a jerk, but that still doesn't make it right. But for saying so, TWO punches for you!

[identity profile] arib.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Depending on which of my great-grandfathers you were referring to, mine was a jerk, too, guess that makes us even. :-)

[identity profile] ttocs.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
And whose was it before Egypt. ;-)

[identity profile] arib.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Unlike a good chunk of the region, Egypt's been Egypt in one form or another for ages.

[identity profile] ttocs.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but IIRC, that particular bit became part of Egypt rather more recently than most of the country.

[identity profile] pallasrosalind.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Sort of but I'm pretty sure that the only really constant part of Egypt was right along the Nile so something as far flung as the Gaza Strip would have had to been fairly recent.

??-1917: Ottoman Empire
1917-22: Occupied by the British
1922-48: British Mandate
1948-9: originally slated as a chunk of the Arab successor state which never existed; left to Egypt at the end of the first Arab-Israeli war

(Thanks, Wikipedia!)

[identity profile] ttocs.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
1600s for the Ottoman Empire IIRC, but yeah, I just wasn't up to searching for it, thanks.

If you go back far enough, it was part of Canaan, and who knows what before that.

[identity profile] llennhoff.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Where 'left to Egypt' means conquered and occupied by Egypt. Just as the West bank was conquered and occupied by Jordan before the Israelis conquered and occupied it in 1967.

And there's also no such thing as a Palestinian nationality, but no one wants to give that any creedence either. They just want to champion a plight *wry snicker*.

Thing is, there is pne *now* more or less as a de facto thing.

[identity profile] elul-3.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been saying that we should give the West Bank back to Jordan for years now...

[identity profile] arib.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Thing is, Jordan doesn't want it anymore.

[identity profile] malkaesther.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't blame Jordan for not wanting the headache of having to deal with these people. They would then become responsible for stopping violence against Israel as it would be being done by "their" citizens.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

[identity profile] ttocs.livejournal.com 2005-08-15 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
What Jordan doesn't want now, and didn't then is the headache of the Palestinians, who were SUPPOSED to go there... (IIRC)

If they could get the land without the headaches...

[identity profile] elul-3.livejournal.com 2005-08-16 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know. I was just sayin'...

[identity profile] hfcougar.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I didn't know that, and the reason I didn't know that prompts me to remember to make note of an obvious but important lesson I learned at my friend's parents' house this weekend.

[identity profile] arib.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
what's the lesson?
