People *do* realize that, prior to 1967, the Gaza Strip was part of Egypt, right?

*sigh*

people tend not to pay attention to the parts of history that don't support their thesis, you know?

I hear ya though.

No problem. I wouldn't swear to you that this is an issue that you and I totally agree on, but I do know that most people only know a little of the relavent history. I don't think I know enough of it to have an informed opinion, and I've done a lot of reading.

There's probably a good chunk of stuff we don't agree on, but I think we're probably both more informed than the general populace around here.

these are both true statements.

The best part? Because of how much I know, I know how much I don't know, and therefore wish to know more.

:)

Nah, nah, dude. You are supposed to start a conversation.... Like "history matters more than recent events" so I can say "the redress of ancient grievances done to others does more harm than good". And then we can talk about it.

By the way, your Great-Grandfather punched my Great-Grandfather in 1922. I'm coming for you... :-)

Honestly, I would start a discussion about it, but I'm fighting off a cold and recovering from a fast, so my brain isn't quite what it usually is.

and your great-grandfather had it coming! :-)

Sorry to hear you don't feel well. Eat something!

Great-Grandpa sure was a jerk, but that still doesn't make it right. But for saying so, TWO punches for you!

Depending on which of my great-grandfathers you were referring to, mine was a jerk, too, guess that makes us even. :-)

Unlike a good chunk of the region, Egypt's been Egypt in one form or another for ages.

Yes, but IIRC, that particular bit became part of Egypt rather more recently than most of the country.

Sort of but I'm pretty sure that the only really constant part of Egypt was right along the Nile so something as far flung as the Gaza Strip would have had to been fairly recent.

??-1917: Ottoman Empire
1917-22: Occupied by the British
1922-48: British Mandate
1948-9: originally slated as a chunk of the Arab successor state which never existed; left to Egypt at the end of the first Arab-Israeli war

(Thanks, Wikipedia!)

1600s for the Ottoman Empire IIRC, but yeah, I just wasn't up to searching for it, thanks.

If you go back far enough, it was part of Canaan, and who knows what before that.

Where 'left to Egypt' means conquered and occupied by Egypt. Just as the West bank was conquered and occupied by Jordan before the Israelis conquered and occupied it in 1967.

And there's also no such thing as a Palestinian nationality, but no one wants to give that any creedence either. They just want to champion a plight *wry snicker*.

Can't blame Jordan for not wanting the headache of having to deal with these people. They would then become responsible for stopping violence against Israel as it would be being done by "their" citizens.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

What Jordan doesn't want now, and didn't then is the headache of the Palestinians, who were SUPPOSED to go there... (IIRC)

If they could get the land without the headaches...
