Don't iron the kitty...

A very adorable kitten has peed on my mattress.

Help?

The current plan, once roomie returns from the supermarket, is to drench it with a water/vinegar mix, wait for it to dry, then use a mix of baking soda and peroxide to try and address the odor.

(It was a small cat, so there was only a small amount of pee, but still, it smells quite noticeably. I really don't want to find out that I have to replace the mattress, it's less than a year old. Also, it's a pillow-top, so I can't just flip it over.)

For now, sleep on the floor. :-)

You can get a urine-abatement chemical from hardware stores or pet supply stores. Use it - cat's tend to return to the same place...

Fortunately, the cat was just a visitor.

Vinegar and hot-water mix seems to have knocked out most of the odor (the fizzing noise it made when it hit my mattress was entertaining as well). Hopefully, baking soda and peroxide mix will get rid of the rest.

Gonna be a late night.

The vinegar should help get rid of the smell, actually, probably better than anything. And yes, get some Simple Solution or Nature's Miracle.

prolly not relevant since kitty was only visiting, but they make some kick-ass stuff called Odoban. Sounds like you have it under control, tho.

Will said kitty visitor still be there tonight? You need to warn me of these things if you don't want me to keel over and die on your couch.

Oxyclean - works on everything (having a puppy, I know what everything smells like) :) Mix with some hot water, and gently scrub. It'll be gone in minutes. Smell and stain.

The enzyme cleaners -- Nature's Miracle, Simple Solution, and so forth -- are what you want. Any pet supply store should have a selection. Get a big bottle of the stuff if you've got a cat. . .
