(no subject)

Third photo down, the kid on the right, wearing the blue plaid shirt is my brother Dani.

(Taken at the Western Wall a few days ago...)

He's in one or two others, too.

I don't generally expect pictures of places I've never been to make me cry. Every time I see anything of Jerusalem, though.... I really must go, someday.

Your brother looks a lot like you.

What are they wearing on their heads in the first two pictures?

Those are tefillin, also sometimes called phylacteries. The link explains them more clearly than I could.

Thanks, Nomi. I was about to hunt up the same website. :-)

(Tangent warning: tangent coming up ahead)

Interestingly, I went and read some of the site- and the tfillin article is non-gender specific/egalitarian if one is reading it without cultural assumptions, while the one on tallit is not. I rather wonder about who's writing these, considering that even in the egalitarian commuity tfillin seem to be culturally regarded as much more a male thing than tallit.

Ah, excellent. Thank you.
