Please tell me your impressions of the South End.

Whether or not you've lived there, have visited there, or have only read about it in the papers, please share your thoughts!

Seems nice enough. I'd be surprised if it were inexpensive, though.

It is really pretty, and probably expensive. Some of the photoshoots I worked on were in that area.

South End = "Southie"?

I've heard that it's a mix of established conservative Irish folk (socially, not fiscally) and the increasing gay community that's been moving in. Needless to say there's friction because of it. I've heard it can be an unpleasant place to be if you're non-white and sometimes even non-male. I've also heard that it's cheap as hell, as far as Boston goes. Rabbit found an apartment share there on one of her queer mailing lists that was $200/person.

Nope, those are two very different chunks of the city.
Southie is as you describe. The South End is pretty, expensive, and has a large gay population.

The South End seems to be the new up-and-coming neighborhood. Lots of folk I know from work have moved there recently. However, as someone else metioned, there's really no local shul. There's davening at Charlesview (I think it's called), but I'm not sure what "flavor" it is (the people I know who go there tend toward the traditional Conservative).

It's pretty and close to stuff, which is good. It's also rumored to be expensive, though.

I was looking for the lyrics to "Southie is my hometown," couldn't find them quickly, but found this and thought it might interest you.

Southie isn't the South End, although it's easy to confuse the two. The South End is the southern part of Downtown Boston, whereas South Boston is South of Downtown.

I think.

Geography here makes no sense, I think i'm living in an Escher painting.
