I really don't know what to say here. On the one hand, I wish I could buy kosher phyllacteries and use them. On the other hand, I sometimes forget to say the Shema. Night and morning? I usually manage one of the two. How lame is that?
I encourage you to get back in the habit, though, if it felt good for you. :)
Not to mention that Kosher tefillin are rather emphatically not cheap. My first pair was a multi-generational hand-me-down, and the second was a graduation present.
(Gee, kind of like Ron's wands in the HP books, but I digress)
If you'd like to borrow mine sometime, let me know and I could drop by one morning.
I've never leined tfilin. And I own a pair. It was my great-granduncle's set. It was left to my granfather, who gave it to me. And I've never used 'em. I'd like to learn how.
If you call the local Chabad house in your neighborhood they would be MORE then happy to show you how to lay Tafilin. Laying Tafilin is a great amzing thing for men to do. It has so many cool sprital reasons and tecnical reasons behind it, it is a nice mitzvah for men to do. If you tell me where you live I will get you the Chabad Houses phone number.
Laying Tafilin can bring so many amazing things into your life, so Kalah Kavod! And yes I like your comparasin to it and Ron Wesley.....la hav del. (can you TELL I teach in a Yashivah?) ;)
It's something I used to do quite regularly, I just got out of the habit while at YU, and yes that's ironic, I know. They do a great job of getting Torah out amongst the masses, but they don't always make their students want to do it.
I'm your basic FFB who got a little disaffected for a bit and stopped davening except for Shabbos. *shrug* It happens.
Your bio said you go to Touro, we probably know some people in common, I have a few friends there.
Yes we probally do, and I also know what you mean about YU knocking it out of you. I also have friends there (pause for the sigh of a Touro girl being friends with YU guys) Actually I like to call myself a soon to be Stern girl but that is anouther story. Yes I know what you mean also by "it happens" on most mornings the extent of davaning I do is with my students and yelling "Put your figure on the word!" in between Brachas. I always feel better when I do daven though. makes me wonder why I dont. wanna be my davaning cop? ask me everyday if I davened at all, it will make me conssious of it and get me back into it. btw may I ask, what do you do?
I work in a group home for adults with mental illness and drug addiction. It's tiring, and the pay's absolute garbage, but I'm getting a lot out of it.
That is very inspiering, I know somone who does that here as well. It takes a lot, I never could do it, Kalah Kavod again. what was your major in YU for this? Certinly not a sy sims stdent lol.
