Jews for Jesus have opened a branch office in Brookline. To be precise, right in the middle of Coolidge Corner.

For the out-of-town folks, this is right in the middle of Jewish Boston, near all the Kosher restaurants, Judaica stores, and at least six synagogues of various denominations.

Jews for Jesus is a Christian group that aggresively targets Jews for conversion, all under the rubric of "It's okay to pray to Jesus and still be a Jew." As far as I know, all the denominations of Judaism call praying to Jesus "Christianity." Nothing necessarily wrong with it, but it ain't Judaism. On my way to work, I saw several of them passing out leaflets on Harvard Street. No, they weren't those friendly environmental activist kids from MassPIRG, they were wearing nicely coordinated "Jews for Jesus" T-shirts.

I'm all for free expression of religion, but when it comes to proselytizing at me or my co-religionists, I'll see that as an gauntlet that's been thrown to the ground, one I'll pick up and beat you around the intellectual head and shoulders with.

*sigh* Looks like I'll have to start carrying my Tanach with me in my workbag, just in case. (Translation alert: Tanach means Bible, not pepper-spray, though the idea's tempting... :-) )

I had more to this post, but can't remember it right now...

If you want to carry something lighter, I strongly recommend Samuel Levine's "You Take Jesus, I'll Take God." It essentially provides Torah-based refutations to the specific proselytization arguments targeted toward Jews.

She is pretty, isn't she? Fortunately for me, she's nearsighted. :-)

Here's the uncropped shot (I really did wear a suit!):

Oh! Sounds like a good read. I have _Path Of The Masters_ on my nightstand waiting for consumption. I've always had a hard time with christianity though.

I found it pretty well written, and thoughtful - particularly about the typical nature of that sort of proselytization, and the proselytizers themselves.
