I've never used imovie, so I couldn't speak to the how the 2009 version might be superior to the 2008 version. You might want to check with folks who have more iLife iExperience. :-)
For one thing, it strips out all of the PowerPC leftovers, so you regain around 6GB of harddrive space just by installing it. It also is supposed to use the 64-bit file architecture, which lets your computer use RAM more efficiently, and may (although I might be misinterpreting this bit) let you install more RAM.
