Toaster is a Racist Term- the finale

This is based just on my initial viewing, I haven't had the time to watch it through again.
Things I liked:
-The entire rescue mission, from start to finish.
-As annoyed as I was at Racetrack and Skulls for turning coat and joining the mutiny, I was sad that their complete and utter inability to get themselves killed failed them in the finale. Death by windshield gravel is a really ignominious way to go.
-That said, kudos to dead-Racetrack for pushing the Big Red Button and nuking the colony.
-I liked that the flashbacks eventually started to make sense, and gave us some insight to the characters' backstories. Also, I liked being able to see some of Caprica prior to it getting nuked.
That said, Tigh's Howard Dean scream was a bit much. :-)
-Baltar's dad rules.
-When Caprica Six and Baltar saw Head-Six and Head-Baltar at the same time.
-"Would you mind not telling her the plan?" Brilliant.
-Boomer, the brave little toaster.
-Tory finally getting what she deserved. I liked Cally, a lot. (That said, I'm a little miffed at Tyrol for losing his shit exactly when he did. Galen, wait until you've finished downloading the critical information needed to end a horrible war, *then* lose your shit and go into a murderous rage).
-Cavil eating a bullet. Especially given that (according to an interview with RDM) it was Dean Stockwell's idea in the first place. "Okay Sam, Ziggy says we need to get information on the Cylon's ability to resurrect, and then you'll get to go home... Frak."
-The red-striped Cylons and the old-school Cylons playing Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots.
-I liked quite a few things about the ending. First, I liked that it was a definite endpoint. I liked that each character had a good-bye moment.
-I liked that Helo didn't die. Especially since I had heard rumors that he was gonna buy it.
-I cried when Laura died. I don't care that it's been coming since the miniseries, it made me cry.
-Unlike lots of folks, I liked *some* aspects of the Deus ex Machina ending. For one thing, they'd been alluding towards it in some way since season one ("I'm an angel of god, sent to protect you." Hello?). I liked that they left it open enough that it didn't have to be an actual deity. (Head-Six referring to the universe as "a complex system," and that "running the same equations may have different results," and my personal favorite, Head-Baltar's "you know it doesn't like that name.")
-Also, I don't think the end of the show was particularly technophobic or anti-science. Head-Six's opinion that the cycle won't happen again this time, along with the fact that "we" are part Cylon, part-Human. I loves me my Scooba, yes I do.
Things I didn't like:
-As alluded to earlier, I didn't like Tyrol flipping out and popping Tory when he did. End the war, then take vengeance on the ex-girlfriend who airlocked your wife.
-Where was Leoben? He was barely in the film, and deserved more time. Ditto Simon and Doral. I *did* like Doral's reaction to seeing a dead body that came from his model line. A sort of eyeroll and headshake.
-Hooray, we've reached the end of our journey! Let's now divest ourselves of every aspect of our developed society, even the useful non-violent ones like medicine, and go native!
Take people from a developed society, maroon them somewhere without any tools, domesticated animals, or seedstocks, and they'll die in *very* short order. This is why we couldn't easily have any sequels. The first act would have Lee dying of dysentery. The second act would have Athena or Caprica Six (y'know, the Cylons with the history of difficult pregnancies?) dying in childbirth. The finale would have Farmer Baltar frakking up the crops and dooming everyone to starvation. Good times.
I also can't possibly see how everyone from the fleet would agree to this.
Complaints aside, BSG remains my favorite TV show, and I feel a little weird now that it's gone. It's like when a good friend moves far away because of a great new job. You're happy for them, but you miss them. Sure they'll come by to visit, and their cousin Caprica is moving to town sometimes next year, but it's not the same.
The Plan hit's SciFi in the Fall, tune in then.

Date: 2009-03-28 01:39 am (UTC)Gaius and Julius Baltar are the kings, so to speak, or: Gaius(+)Julius(=)Cäsar - where did I read that before? ;o)
Was that an intentional Easter Egg from the writers? Or am I start to go nuts w/o BSG...
As for the review: Nice take, pretty much agree with it.
Helo... I was basically screaming at the TV when he got shot and the writers didn't inform us if he lives or died! ARGH! What a nice surprise at the end! Loved it.
Baltar and Six on the Galactica: You see him/her too??? ROTFL!!

Date: 2009-03-27 09:14 pm (UTC)Two things:
1. "They" in this case means one character, Head Six. You can't believe everything a character tells you in a story, especially when the character doesn't appear to exist outside another, deeply conflicted character's head. Yes, Head Six appeared to believe this. And up until the finale there was every reason not only to question whether her beliefs were true, but also to question whether she even existed. I will guarantee you that at least 3 out of 4 people who are now saying things like "We've known she was an angel since day 1, look at this dialogue!" knew NOTHING of the kind until the rest of us did. Admit it: you all had as much reason to doubt as we did.
2. RDM has stated (http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showtopic=2329378) that on day 1 and many days thereafter, he thought Head Six was going to be a hallucination, but eventually decided he'd rather see Baltar be right about something. So maybe you knew it from season 1, but apparently the show's creator had a different explanation in mind for a while.

And I thought it was great that Tyrol blew a gasket, kicked Tori's ass, and screwing Cavil et al. for kidnapping Hera.
