In a classic example of "damned if you do, damned if you don't:"



A recent research paper puts forth the notion that Israeli soliders aren't raping Palestinian women, but only because they don't consider them human, obviously.

Not because rape is utterly, horribly wrong or anything like that, no.

Yeah, Hebrew U produces some serious gems. We got wind of this academic atrocity about two weeks ago. My mother-in-law, herself an academic in this country (former professor of Environmental Law at Netanya Academic College), just had to laugh. Her normal response as to why there is no rape in the IDF used to be because at the end of the day/week/month, soldiers have to go home and see their mothers/sisters/grandmothers/girlfriends/wives; now she has a much more cynical response. Israeli academia, much like Israeli politics, is at its best when it's ignored entirely.

Say, did it reach your shores yet that a leading Israeli daily newspaper's editor (the extreme left-leaning Ha'aretz) claimed that "Israel wants to be raped"?

I did not read the original paper, but the article does not state that this was the "only" reason.

I did see it say that it was trying to explain why the crime of rape is lower in the IDF than in other comparable situations.

From the summary, it is quite possible that the IDF has all the good reasons to avoid rape, plus a few unique reasons, and that this might explain the lower-than-expected level.

Or not - without the source paper, hard to say.
