Thoughts for the future...

If I ever end up buying a house (and I mean a house house, not an apartment, unless it's feasible) I'd like to get solar power.

It's of limited utility around here.

Depending on exactly where your house is, and, like, if there are a lot of trees and stuff, it can give you a bit of an advantage, but not that much.

One thing that CAN be nice is a solar water heater. You still need a regular water heater, as well, but a solar water heater can be a nice adjunct.

Where I lived in Australia, our roof was a water-collector, all of our household water came from the roof, into a big cistern. We did have a solar panel over the bathroom, and water sat up there before feeding down to the shower. Sometimes it was almost dangerously hot. It was fabulous.

I agree I saw some show that had the solar roof panels that look like normal roofing material that looked great.

We have discussed quite a lot how to live as far off the grid as we can, even if we have other houses around us. Of course, the ultimate plan will depend on where we live, but we want to be as energy efficient as we can. Currently a rice-bale house with a cistern and solar power sounds good, but it depends on where.
