I've heard that most of the attendees conversed in Yiddish, because it was the only language they had in common...

What was that about a universal language?

Obviously, it's Yiddish. :-)

When I was 19, I took a trip to Poland and saw the grave of the creator of Esperanto. (He's buried in one of (IIRC) Warsaw's biggest Jewish cemetaries, along with several prominent Rebbeim.
