Life on Mars, airing on BBC America. Named after the David Bowie song.

In a nutshell, a British police detective in 2006 is hit by a car and wakes up in 1973. Has he really travelled back in time, or is he having a coma-related delusion?

Well acted, even the smaller roles manage to shine very nicely. The lead actor plays the "confused time traveller" bit very well, and we can definitely relate to him. Some of the cops remind me of a piece of dialogue from the failed "Timecop" TV series. Before roughing up a suspect in 1975, a cop remarked to the time traveller that recruited him and brought him to the past, that "this is the 1970s, civil rights are for wimps!"

A question for folks that will remember the time period better than I: Were the 1970s as depressing as they look? I was born in autumn 1978, and don't have many memories before the spring or summer of 1980 or so.

Me too, but it's still a fun show.

Besides, if a show were realistically about life on Mars, it'd probably just involve microbes of some sort.

In a big season cliffhanger, they'd be scooped up by a rover, and the audience would be left wondering... was it Spirit or Opportunity? :-D
