From the way the evangelicals have been in the last decade or so, I'd be less surprised had they taken Lady Liberty and stretched her out on a cross. It's pretty much what they've done metaphorically already.

But no, if that's how they want to spend their money, gezundeheit. Better that than helping the RRR (Religious Republican Right) take another election.

While I'm happy not to live next door to it, I can't shake the feeling that somehow I would be much more offended if I were Christian. Just thinking of how I would feel if a Jewish group pulled something like that, even with the best of intentions...

I also wonder whether its creators have given much thought to the Statue of Liberty's cultural and historical origins. I seem to recall that a lot of contemporary Roman Catholics were deeply offended at the idea of putting a giant statue of a pagan goddess in the middle of New York Harbor in the first place.

The Founding Fathers deliberately decided not to establish a state religion for this very reason. I wonder if the Federal Government can sue them for some copyright violation or something, or is the image of Lady Liberty public domain? I am a Christian myself, but also realize that the Creator has placed Truth in many places. To co-opt this image for "promotional purposes" is hideous.

I think it's interesting as an expression of art and religion. I'm no more offended by "Lady Liberty" clutching a cross than I would be if she held a Star of David or a Flying Spaghetti Monster. Though, come to think of it, I wonder what it would look like if they'd chosen to put chtulu in liberty's robes. It's art. It may not be to my taste, but as long as I don't have to pay for it, I won't necessarily hammer on someone else's vision just because it doesn't suit my tastes, and I won't lump people into "us vs them" catagories just because they don't believe the way I do.
