The bathroom doorknob is now sufficiently busted that I plan on taking my cellphone into the loo with me in case I get stuck and need to call for help.

note I almost wrote call for backup, but if the bathroom's clogged I'd call a plumber, not someone who can open the door from the outside.

Also, the landlord's been informed, it should be fixed "soon."

Oh dear. You can't just wedge it a bit with a magazine?

Then it won't shut.

I never shut the door unless I have to.

I don't think I'd be as comfortable using the bathroom with the door open if my housemates are home as you might be with yours. :-)

True. :) Two of mine like to sit on the floor and stare while I use the toilet.

If the landlord is slow, you might consider taping the latch (so it can't deploy) and using a doorstop or magazine or something from the inside to keep it shut while you're in there (if the door's loose enough not to just stay). At least if you only have to pull, and not pull + turn to disengage, your odds of safe egress should be better.
