Could someone explain to me *why* snipers would be shooting at people trying to evacuate from a hospital?

Also, why hasn't the National Guard or Coast Guard shown up and ventilated these people yet?

Why: five days with no food, little sleep, plenty of wet, disease and filth all around, and with very little fresh water. And disrespect from all sides; when you're starving, being called names and being shot at for pulling bread that is going bad off of shelves doesn't engender a civil response. As for shooting at people coming out of hospitals? I would guess madness. But madness comes in the above conditions. Shoot at the people with the uniforms and guns; they pissed us off before. Rationality is easy to maintain from our warm, dry, safe homes here.

The National Guard and some Marines have just arrived, and is working its way through the city. Live updates in [livejournal.com profile] interdictor's journal.

Want an answer?

They think that by threatening the copters, they can make them come to them first, instead of going somewhere else. The folks that remain in New Orleans are either poor and desperate, or had the means to leave but were too stupid... and a few, very few, exceptions of dedicated people not leaving important posts.

As for the National Guard - they are coming. As a friend explained to me in email (He's with the Louisiana Army Reserve and National Guard) "THE CAVALRY IS COMING! RIDING HARD. We're pumping 10,000 troops into LA tonite. It took us more than a day to get a working airfield there.

The C2 was destroyed when the levees broke; the National Guard Command
center was destroyed; General Landreneau is running his war from the roof of the Superdome parking Lot, NOPD Command center was flooded out. It's a catastrophe beyond anything you know."

Perhaps they should have started staging earlier, but that would be a matter of it being insufficient Presidential priority, I imagine....

*nod* -- I'm not blaming the National Guard. Federal priorities? They should have started staging on Sunday. If he's not lying about not thinking the levees would be breached, then he needs to get new advisers, or maybe just pick up a newspaper. Maybe news.google.com should go on the presidential reading list.

There are some very thirsty, very angry people in New Orleans. Some people simply didn't have the financial wherewithal to leave. One person interviewed said it cost her $200 to evacuate for Ivan, and she simply didn't have that cash this time around.

I don't have a problem with folks taking food and water from stores right now. Most of it's going to go bad.

I'm okay with grabbing a pair of dry sneakers.

But a lot of folks are stealing TVs, tires off cars (imagine trying to get out of town and finding your otherwise good car without tires), garden tools . . . weird.

And as much as I'm anti-death penalty, I don't think I'd have problems "ventilating" folks who are actively trying to kill people. It's one or the other that's going to die, and I'd rather it not be the EMT or the guy driving the supply truck.

Not the answer you wanted, but...

Because everyone seems to think that there is instantaneous organization. There is no communication whatsoever right now. (My boss's hubby is in communications in the Army and he has just been pulled off leave to head there.) There is no power, no nothing, and especially no way to coordinate without communication.

I think the snipers need to die a cruel horrible death because it just makes NO SENSE to me at all.
