Sep. 1st, 2005 02:51 pmCould someone explain to me *why* snipers would be shooting at people trying to evacuate from a hospital?
Also, why hasn't the National Guard or Coast Guard shown up and ventilated these people yet?

Date: 2005-09-01 07:34 pm (UTC)They think that by threatening the copters, they can make them come to them first, instead of going somewhere else. The folks that remain in New Orleans are either poor and desperate, or had the means to leave but were too stupid... and a few, very few, exceptions of dedicated people not leaving important posts.
As for the National Guard - they are coming. As a friend explained to me in email (He's with the Louisiana Army Reserve and National Guard) "THE CAVALRY IS COMING! RIDING HARD. We're pumping 10,000 troops into LA tonite. It took us more than a day to get a working airfield there.
The C2 was destroyed when the levees broke; the National Guard Command
center was destroyed; General Landreneau is running his war from the roof of the Superdome parking Lot, NOPD Command center was flooded out. It's a catastrophe beyond anything you know."
Perhaps they should have started staging earlier, but that would be a matter of it being insufficient Presidential priority, I imagine....

Date: 2005-09-01 11:29 pm (UTC)There are some very thirsty, very angry people in New Orleans. Some people simply didn't have the financial wherewithal to leave. One person interviewed said it cost her $200 to evacuate for Ivan, and she simply didn't have that cash this time around.

Date: 2005-09-01 11:27 pm (UTC)I'm okay with grabbing a pair of dry sneakers.
But a lot of folks are stealing TVs, tires off cars (imagine trying to get out of town and finding your otherwise good car without tires), garden tools . . . weird.
And as much as I'm anti-death penalty, I don't think I'd have problems "ventilating" folks who are actively trying to kill people. It's one or the other that's going to die, and I'd rather it not be the EMT or the guy driving the supply truck.
Not the answer you wanted, but...
Date: 2005-09-02 01:29 am (UTC)I think the snipers need to die a cruel horrible death because it just makes NO SENSE to me at all.
