I think the Indian a Jones character was based on this guy, so the name makes sense...

Maybe the character was--I wouldn't know--but the name wasn't. Spielberg originally wanted to name him Indianna Smith, but Lucas convinced him to change the last name to "Jones." Probably the best move Lucas made from that point on. ;)
