Google, when coupled with LJ, usually gets me results.

To that end, does anyone know of a website that would give me news highlights for any year, just by plugging in the date?

historychannel.com isn't too terribly helpful, oddly enough.

Try looking up the given year in Wikipedia. E.g.: 961.
