Or, why I don't want the Red Sox to make it to the World Series.

Or, at the very least, why I don't want them to have to go through the Yankees to do so.

Having spent most of my life as a nominal Yankees fan living in Red Sox country, I know how deeply the sheer hatred for the Yankees runs in this town.

As a Bostonian, I know how desperate the "curse of the Bambino" has made many of my fellow townspeople.

As the son of someone who works in trauma medicine, I hear stories of the large number of severe injuries that occur whenever the Patriots win a Super Bowl, the Red Sox win a divsion title, or the Bruins win anything. (Rabid hockey fans are the most violent people you'll ever meet, rabid Bruins fans doubly so.)

As an emergency medical professional, it is my educated opinion that, should the Sox make it to the series, defeating the Yankees along the way, the Fenway area and Kenmore Square will burn. (Fenway is a neighborhood, not just the name of the park)

Windows and storefronts will be smashed, cars will be overturned, lots of vandalism and a spot of looting can be expected.

The injuries, needless to say, will be considerable.

and of course, I'll be one of the poor saps expected to help clean up the mess.

and really, I'm not saying this solely because of my Yankee fandom, though it is a factor.)

A couple of weeks ago, even before the end of the Wild Card series, Menino had meetings with various and sundry reps of neighborhoods that have been problematic in recent past (such as members of the Northeastern University administration). He's also taken steps to up the police presence all over the city. The Super Bowl aftermath really made him wake up and start to pay attention to where there were problems.
