(no subject)

Saying the blessings for thunder and lightning get you funny looks.

(and for the record, you only need to say it once per day, not every single strike...)

I love saying those blessings. It's just that I don't have them memorized, so always need to check a bencher.

If you'd care to share, I'd love to know that blessing (in English).

For thunder:
"Blessed are you God, Ruler of the Universe, whose strength and power fills the world."

For lightning (also used for various other natural phenomenon):
"Blessed are you God, Ruler of the Universe, who performed the acts of creation."

I adore the blessing for lightning, since this idea of the electric current that comes from the sky and starts all life (I'm paraphrasing, obviously) is mirrored in some scientific theories that say that the catalysts for life came when lightning from the earth's storm early atmosphere struch the nutrient broth that was the earth's early oceans.

You know, I don't know that I've ever made that connection in as concrete a form as you've just put it.

Thanks. :-)

(have a safe trip this weekend, by the way...)

Also as a follow-up, the same blessing's said when you see a comet, experience an earthquake, or see large mountains or rivers for the first time. All things that are either the causes or results of various scientific theories of creation.
