Um... Um...
Mar. 29th, 2004 11:40 pmI kinda have a lead on an apartment in Davis Square (on Aberdeen, if that's a reference for anyone).
Issues to ponder:
1) While they do keep kosher, they're not as Sabbath-observant as I am. After speaking with one of the potential roomies, they strike me as fairly non-judgmental types, so I don't think that'll be an issue, provided they're cool with unscrewing the fridge light and leaving the bathroom light on. (I'd also probably spend lots of Shabbatot over in Brookline.
2) Rent's pretty much at the top of my range, but is affordable depending on what utilities look like. This may become an issue when I have to switch jobs, as I'll be making less as an EMT than I am now.
3) (and this is the big one) It'd be a mixed-gender apartment. One male roommate (also named Ari, let the wackiness ensue), and one woman whose name I don't know. Now, there are definite religious issues such as yichud (sequestration with a member of the opposite sex) that are a concern. Personally, having another guy ariund makes this less of an issue for me, and it's generally work-aroundable most of the time when said roomie wouldn't be around. If need be, I can keep myself occupied outside of the apartment as necessary. (I've had friends deal with this, so I know it can be done).
The big issue would be selling this to my folks. Now, while they'd be very happy to have me out of the house, they pretty much want me out on their terms, and a POSSLQ situation doesn't exactly seem like something that will cheer them very much.
Any advice would be welcome.
(Of course, I havenm't really had a chance to meet with the current tenants, see the apartment, or do any real budget crunching, but I want to get this stuff out into the open early.)
