Amusing training moment...

I've been in med-training for the past few days, and have met some really cool people who I wish I'd be able to. But first, my technolust over the coffee machine.

It's so cool. You insert your cup, press a button, and a slot opens for you to insert a small bag with your specific blend of coffee, tea or cocoa. After you close the slot, it brews your cup, and throws away the little baggie for you.

Anyways, back to the normal human contact...

Got into an interesting conversation with J, a Daoist who grew up in a fairly Jewish neighborhood just outside of NYC. When people overheard the conversation it turned into everyone's favorite gameshow "Dispel Everyone's Misconceptions About Orthodoxy" With your host, me!

"Yes, I wear this thing on my head almost all of the time. No, I don't need to sleep with it..."

"No, Jews don't believe in Hell, it's complicated."

"No, blessing the pig doesn't make it Kosher"

"I've never had a cheeseburger. I'm sure they're quite good, but I'll pass, thank you."

and finally, the one that always comes up...

"No, we don't have to cut a hold in a sheet to... *ahem* *blush*"

After training, J and I ended up on the same train, as she lives in Brighton, and we spoke some more without the throngs. She was curious about Jewish weddings, as she and her Christian boyfriend are close to getting engaged, and she wondered how different cultures approached it, especially with regards to mixed marriages.

Strangely enough, after the marriage talk, we spoke about death. Odd combo.

Well, tomorrow I go back to the residence, and my usual co-workers, who, while really cool, tend to be between 20-40 years older than me. I feel like there's nobody I can relate to at work. I'm not happy about it, but it's something I can live with, at least for the time being.

But if E pulls out pics of her grandkids again, I may scream. :-)

Oh, that must be fun, playing Fight The Stereotypes :) Aside of that....well, good luck with the job, and all that good stuff.

(Cut a hole in a sheet? *boggle*)

*laugh* Yeah, I had that same myth before knowing you. But some of us know better, now! *bounce*

Religious discussions with people who know their own faith well and can discuss it without getting defensive or pushy are ~fascinating~. I learned more about Catholicism from my friend Giselle in a few short conversations than I'd known my entire life previously. And, going to a largely Jewish high school, I was very fortunate to be exposed to a wide range of practices in that faith. Kudos to you, for being able to field questions like that without getting offended or rattled!

I had close to a dozen people asking me questions at once, literally from all sides. It was a little rattling, but still fun. :-)

The recovering vegetarian says that soy cheese on a Boca burger is pretty good. >:)
