(no subject)

Three thirtysomething female staffers just exited the mailroom talking about how hot the UPS guy was, one of them thanking the other two for dragging her in to see him.

I felt mortified, really.

If it was a hot-looking UPS gal, would you have gone to look if someone mentioned it?

I don't think I'd go out of my way to, honestly. Especially while I'm at work.

So, actually, under the statues of sexual harrassment law the behavior that those women were indulging in is considered "creating a hostile work environment" and is against the law. It is your legal right to feel comfortable in your work environment both physically and mentally.

I would guess that your institution has never had sexual harrassment law training. They should call my mom.

Oh, they have. Every year, each employee gets a copy of the sexual harassment policy, and you get a lecture at orientation

That's not enough. People need to be shown, and illustrated to in a dynamic matter just what is acceptable and unaccepable. It is a matter of modifying behavior, not just reading a packet and dozing through a speech.

My last job had a much more comprehensive method, it was probably the only thing they did right.

(I recall the "diversity" training they ran us through, where I was the only white person there...)

It's a good thing you don't know my RL friends. Your mortification would be forever.

I was trying to think of a meaningful response to this, but I can't. Except that if it'd been guys acting that way, they'd probably have their nuts run up a flagpole by now.
