Apparently, French president Jacques Chirac is attempting to pass a law banning the wearing of conspicuous religious symbols, such as a yarmulke, keffiyeh or hijab.

Apparently, in France, freedom of religion is allowed. Just do it in the privacy of your own homes where nobody can see you, and wash your hands afterwards.

edit: Correction, the ban would only apply to public schools. Still, feh.

Not just schools

From what I've read, the ban wouldn't just be for public schools- it would be for all public institutions, including government employees and government funded outfits (like hospitals, etc). And Chirac is pushing for France's private sector to enforce a similiar ban on their employees.
