All told, had a fairly nice time.

Elana's got a really nice family, who were wonderful hosts and good cooks. (and with the extended family she's got, Hyim's gonna need to stay on his toes keeping names straight...)

They're all the opposite of her.

By which I mean friendly and outgoing, two things she isn't. I felt like I should have introduced myself to her at the L'chaim or something.

"Hi, I'm Ari, Hyim's older brother. Y'know, one of the five people you ignored whenever you came to visit him at his folks' house..."

Honestly, the fact that he loves her as much as he does is a definite mitigating factor, but I'm afraid her severe reticence around all of us is gonna drive a wedge.

Surprisingly managed to be non-morose through 99 percent of the weekend, am quite proud. Also grateful that only one person (a great-uncle of Elana's) did the whole "So, you're older, why aren't you married yet?" bit.

Ran into an old neighbor from YU, took a while before I remembered his name, but was nice to network again.

and I need to start exercising now so I can be in shape for all the dancing, workout ideas, anyone?

If it makes you feel any better, my cousin got married before his big brother, and his big brother just got married this summer. Also, if it makes you feel better, little-brother's bride was reticent and unfriendly to his family for a good few months before she realized they weren't a threat, calmed down, and now we all love her, and she loves us.

Dunno if it's any reassurance at all, but it might get better. And, if it doesn't, :symapthies:

the whole "So, you're older, why aren't you married yet?" bit

I suppose answering "Because my girlfriend's already married!" is out of the question...

And, "You're even older, when will we be attending your funeral?" would be tactless.

You have a broken "i" tag in there mate; around the word reticence.

I wouldn't mention it, but my entire friends page it italicized now... :)

why aren't you married yet?

If you're feeling cruel, you could say something about waiting for quality and certainty. :-)

I used to get that in my family, but my younger sister has been divorced twice so I don't any more.

I have yet to meet any of the people who've married my maternal cousins. None of my paternal cousins are married. Yet. Especially since I'm... the second or third oldest by a matter of months. Good luck, hon.

Is it possible that her reticence will pretty much isolate him from the family? I'd be concerned about that.
