Home computer is making funky noises again...

We had a brief blackout at around 4AM or so, and I was woken by the sound of my machine rebooting itself. I let it run through it's diagnostics, then shut it down. When I boot it up in the morning, it booted, and was working fine, but there's an awful motory noise coming from the tower. It doesn't sound like the hard drive, but I shut it down and I'll take a peek inside when I get home tonight. I think it may be a fan or something, but I'm not quite sure.

Any local geeks feel like taking a look at it sometime soon? I'll bribe...

For the future, you might want to invest in a UPS. That way your machine won't even notice short outages, and for longer ones, if you're home, you'll probably hear the "I'm running on batteries" beeping and be able to shut down gracefully.

There's a question of space, which is at a premium in my room, and money, which I don't have lying around.

Good points. Space needs aren't that high (mine's about the size of a shoebox), but there is the money thing. A UPS costs less than a new disk drive, but it's the insurance question: certain expense now vs possible expense later. Always a hard call.

Good luck with the repairs! I'm no good with hardware, which is part of why I went for the insurance. :-) (I mean really no good with hardware -- like, I get other people to install memory and simple cards for me, and bought an external hard drive when maybe a second internal one would have been fine.)
