I had that conversation every June 6th until three years ago, I still miss it.

My father-in-law was there on 6 June 1944. His destroyer, the USS Somers, supported the landings. We lost him this February. By some estimates, we are losing over 1,000 World War II veterans a day. Something precious is slipping through our fingers and there just isn't much we can do about it.

I have the same feeling about Memorial Day - I never missed one either calling my Dad or seeing him, and thanking him for all he did. Now I find someone else in the service on Memorial Day, and thank them in his honor.
