So, citizens of Baghdad awoke this morning, looked out the window and asked themselves "Dude, where'd *everybody* go?"
Apparently, whatever was left of local leadership in Baghdad has vanished in the night. What followed was the following two things seen on the news:
1. Lots of looting of both government and private buildings. This is fairly dangerous, and should hopefully be brought under control before total lawlessness kicks in.
2. Lots of Iraqi civillians getting big fat stupid crazy on a bigass statue of Saddam after they toppled it with the help of some Marines with an APC and a winch.
Talking heads were comparing this to the fall of the Berlin Wall. I don't think I'd totally agree with that, the fighting isn't over for one thing, and the two situations are completely different. It's similar in some ways. This was, from what I saw, decades of repressed anger towards Mr. Funny Moustache and his government finally finding a way to express itself. Iraqi exiles/expats in Dearborn, MI have been partying all day, too.
This is insanely cool to watch.
