I've done this before, figure it's worth trotting out once in a while.

Ask me any question you want. I'll answer here or in e-mail.

my question for you...

Why do you work in the mental health profession (esp. given it seems to stress you out and frustrate you so much at times)?

Because I like being able to help people have better, more fulfilling lives. It sounds sappy, but that's about it.

What are Sabbath days like for you? I remember you talking about attempting to remind your college roommate to set the alarm clock for you without asking him to do so. Do you get weekends off? Have you ever had to go in to work on Saturday? I've been curious about that sort of thing ever since i read the Kemelman "Rabbi Who..." novels.

What do you mean by "what are they like?"

I get Fridays and Saturdays off, so timing is never an issue. Sabbaths are quiet, I go to services Saturday mornings, and occasionally Friday evenings as well. The rest of the time I relax, read, nap or hang out with friends as appropriate. :-)

Being it I am totaly ready to pass out from the past 3 days of fasting and drinking (who came up with THAT combanation may I ask?) so I cant really think of any personal questions, but just wanted to say I think this is a BRILLANT idea. And I would like to see how you answer the Shabbos question, unless it ends up being personal...then forget it.

Err... Esther fasted for three days; we are only expected to do one. What am I missing?

Esther and the whole Jewish nation fasted for 3 days, and went into a state of Shivah, and we turn it into one day of kind of fasting. I think it is because we need to remeber the concept and the Tashuvah but it is such a nais that we need not be burdened with such things and should just go out and party to fool the Yetza Hara and remind ourselves that as a nation our prayers and fasting DOES do good. This is very good to keep in mind in todays times as well.

I was curious if you've ever been in a situation where you had to "work" on the sabbath in the orthodox meaning i.e.: turn on the lights (use fire), or ride in a car somewhere.

Yes, but only in emergency "the rules go out the window" circumstances like deaths or injuries. Thus far I've only had to break Sabbath... three or four times, I think.

Have you always been observant? If not, what caused you to change?

I've always been Orthodox, and always been observant, though my level of observance has changed more than a few times for many different reasons.
