Mr Rogers memories...

aribWhen I was around three years old, Mr. Rogers had either an episode or series of episodes dealing with divorce. While I don't remember much of the actual content anymore, my mom tells me that part of his explanation included something along the lines of "Sometimes your mommy and daddy love you very much, but one of them has to go away."
Now, the week this episode was running, my dad was out of town on several job interviews that later turned into the reason we moved to Boston.
So, ever the logical toddler, I walked up to mom and asked "Are you and Abba getting a 'avorse?'"
She was rather confused until she watched TV with me later that day.
Okay, that one wasn't very funny at all, this one's better.
Remember Chef Brockley, the cook who looked kinda like an ex-marine who'd show up and regale Mr.Rogers with some culinary oddity? I vividly remember Mr. Rogers receiving a package from the chef with instructions on how to make a simple, but interesting snack that consisted of wrapping a slice of american cheese around a peeled banana.
You could *tell* that Mr. Rogers absolutely hated it. Still, he managed to finish the piece he ate, give a big smile and say "You know what? I think I'll save the rest of this for later."
The guy had class and compassion, and we're all poorer now that he's gone.
So long, neighbor.

Date: 2003-02-27 05:22 pm (UTC)Amen, Ari. I couldn't have said it better. I keep tearing up when I read or hear about it. I guess I never realized what an effect it all had on me when I was young. I can't help but feel it's the passing of an age of television never to be seen again, and the sign that my youth really is over.
My favorite memory of the show were the films he used to show on "picture, picture". I loved getting to see how shoes and crayons were made, and the bookbinding factory, and all the other wonderful places we went to. To be young again, just for a moment, neh?
