Question for cat-owning folks...

aribSo, my brother Dani called me this weekend, among the things we discussed was that he and his dorm-mates have adopted the neighbor's cat. (It spends most of they day in their yard, and is very friendly towards them and such. They've named her Squishy, for reasons that I don't comprehend.) Among his many questions:
"How do you know if a cat's pregnant?"
I honestly don't know, so I'm punting it out to you.
The only things I could think of were "Well, she'll get bigger around the middle, and will start nesting when kitten-time gets close."
According to Dani she's getting bigger, acting friendlier towards the local humans, and was seen "canoodling with the boy cats."
