Sem-Religious question...

When I was growing up, every synagogue I visited had at least one, and usually several people we'd refer to as "The Candy Man" or "The Candy Lady." This was a person, usually around grandparent age, who had a large stash of lollypops that he/she'd dispense to all the various and sundry kiddies under five or six or so.

Is this just a Jewish thing, or did this also happen to any of you who grew up going to church/other worship services?

These are the deep questions I ask every day... :)

Well, it never *happened* to me, although that might be because I started going to church when I was too old for it, but my grandfather *was* that guy at his church up in Michigan.

I think it's a universal that there's almost always *someone* that comes to religious services with candy or some such for the littles. In my experience (since I've seen it other places), it's usually a grandparent-age type person. :)

At my evangelical church growing up, something like 1/4 of the adults would carry candy for the kids. :)

Actually that never happened at my synagogue. And I didn't hear about it happening at other synagogues in that city either.
