I've been through that same realization. Eventually walked out of a New Years Party mixer at 11pm because I realized I'd enjoy myself much more being alone in the crowds of First Night than in this stupid Matza Ball thingie.
IMO/IME, do things you enjoy in public places (if you read, spend more time browsing in bookstores frex) and you will find other people who enjoy the same things and might enjoy doing them with you.
[My realization was partly that "I don't enjoy this; anybody who would be enough like me to date wouldn't enjoy this, so why am I looking for dating material someplace like this?"]
