More thoughts on Matrix 3...

The billboard in the subway advertizing Tastee Wheat was a nice touch, it shows a level of continuity and internal consistancy.

Other than a bit at the beginning, then again at the end, there's very little time spent in the Matrix, most of the film takes place in the "Real World." This is good in that it explores a largely ignored aspect of the movie-universe, but fans are used to seeing everyone in the Matrix, not running around in their grungies. (Does anyone on those hovercrafts do their laundry?)

Erika pointed out that the real-world violence is much gorier than the Matrix violence, probably to drive home how "real" it is.

I think some nudity snuck by the editors during the Merovingian's nightclub scene. Well, not so much the nudity as what was going on with the nudity. But I digress.

Okay, after this line come the big spoiler points:

Trinity's death was a) unneccessary and b) far too drawn out. You've been impaled by five or six metal rods after a hundreds-of-miles-an-hour power dive into the machine city. We know you love him, but you should be dead already, stop solliloquizing.

(That was me being detached, the emotional part of me was saying "She's dead, wah! and Neo's blindeded! wah!")

Yeah, Neo's fight with Smith!Bane was impressive, and gory. The final showdown with Smith was also fantastic. The Matrix fight scenes tend to be more superhero-esque than the fight scenes in any of the actual superhero movies.

As I said in my review, I just wish they could have decided if the Smith/Neo showdown was doing to be epic superhero or martial arts.

Up until very recently, we didn't have the CGI to properly render people well enough to do good four-color superheroes. I'd love to see a Fantastic Four movie made.. but who would play Victor von Doom?

I just wish they could have decided if the Smith/Neo showdown was doing to be epic superhero or martial arts.

It was both, which makes more sense to me. It was interesting seeing martial arts translated to a three-dimensional medium by having them duke it out in midair. The conceit of flight powered superheroes zipping through the air and throwing haphazard punches never really made sense to me, there was no real fighting style behind it.

(and did you notice that when Neo got "Smithed" at the end, the Smith was wearing Neo's sunglasses? Nice touch.)

It just screamed "live action Dragon Ball movie" to me. All they were missing was the ability to replicate anime hair.
