I just got back from Serenity.

No, don't run. I won't post anything spoilery without cut-tagging.

Simply put, it was amazing.

Slightly longer: There were one or two things that didn't quite sit well with me, but I think they're due to the fact that the version of the film that we saw was a rough cut.

Next post will be about my experience in the actual theater, and not film related.

I'm considering making a filter for folks who might want a review with spoilers, or an opportunity to ask spoiler-laden questions. :-) If that's you, please let me know by commenting here.

So, I met up with my friends R and J, and we took the T to the theater. we got there early enough that the line wasn't too long, but it rapidly extended from the back of the theater lobby all the way to the front door to the theater.

The mood was celebratory, really. People chatting with one another about the show, handing out fliers for Firefly/Serenity-related parties, and just enjoying themselves in front of some studio execs. :-)

Also, there was a film crew present doing interviews and shooting footage for a documentary about Firefly/Serenity fans that'll be included in the DVD of the film. While I didn't get interviewed, I was in lots of crowd and reaction shots. (If you get the DVD, I'm the lanky Jewish boy in the Blue Sun t-shirt and yin-yang kippah. *grin*)

They opened the theater for seating about an hour before the movie started. There was more chatting, I ran into [livejournal.com profile] farwing, and got to shmooze with her for a bit, which was nice. All the while, people were singing songs from the TV show, and the camera crew was filming away. Before the film started, a security rep from the theater gave us the "no cameras, no videos, we're watching..." spiel. Then they brought the house lights up to full, a side door opened, and Morena Baccarin and Sean Maher (Inara and Simon, from the film/show) walked in.

I don't think I've ever seen a standing ovation *before* a show starts, it was different. :-)

They each spoke for a minute or two, and told us that they hadn't seen the film yet, either. ("We just got back from a con in London with the rest of the crew. They say hi.") Afterwards, they took their seats, and the security wonk informed us that thre would be a signing after the film.

(Swag: one Serenity keychain, on autographed postery thing)

Afterwards, the house lights went down, and before the film started there was a short film of a message from Joss. Mostly thanking the fans for their tireless support. ("If you like the film, tell everyone. Spread the word. If you didn't like the film, now's the time for you to remain in silent introspection...")

Then the film started.

I feel obligated to mention that if I disclose any spoiler information about the movie, several people will hunt me down and kill me. Thus, I'll confine my comments to non-spoiler, non-plot stuff.

First, the film was a rough cut. Some of the effects were a little raw, some of the music was unfinished, and some of the footage needed tightening. I'm sure they'll take care of that within the next four months. :-)

Otherwise? it was wonderful. The chemistry's still there between all of the characters, the humor's classic Joss, and we get to learn about what all of our Big Damn Heroes have been up to.

Great, great film.

Afterwards, there was a really brisk signing with the two cast members, I had enough time to tell Sean Maher that my favorite episode focused heavily on his character, and both of them that my friend J, who'd never seen anything Firefly-related before thought it was really good.

and now, here I am, ready to fall over.

'nite.

Conversation between me and my roomie:

(Note- we're in the process of planning an ice cream and booze party.)

R- Roomie

A- Our Hero

R: So, say we made a milkshake...

A: Would it bring all the boys to the yard?

R: *insert long-suffering gaze* No.
