Work had it's employee appreciation dinner tonight.
I did karaoke for the first time and, unlike many of my co-workers, I was sober. :-)
I sang "Let it Be" by the Beatles. I was struck by the irony of the obviously Jewish boy singing about how Mother Mary comes to him in times of trouble. :-)
I coulda sung some of it in Hebrew, as "Lu Yehi" is a fairly popular song in Israel, but I think I would've weirded some people.
Got to see Old Boss Who Got Transferred for the first time since she left. She hugged me, which was odd, but still very nice to see her, she's really sweet.
Things learned today.
1) When you're the first person called up for the karaoke contest, suck it up and dive in, it gets you prizes. Yay me!
2) When co-worker opts to sing a spiritual rather than do karaoke, and it's entitled "I'm grateful that I have Christ in my life," be very quiet and invisible, the few people staring at the frisbee on my head are just curious, really.
3) Despite smoking two packs of ciggies a day, the aforementioned co-worker has an impressive voice.
4) My company's higher-ups went out of their way to get me a kosher meal, they rock as well as roll
5) When boss' wife asks me to dance, be nothing but insanely polite when bowing out.
6) Co-worker G needs to learn that he can't ogle every female at the party. Or, rather he can look all he wants (and there was some nice eye-candy,) but he should definitely keep the comments to himself.
7) Always mess with co-workers' heads, as evidenced by the following tale that happened on our way to the party:
We all decided to travel together in the program's van, and were supposed to be followed by a van from another program, as they weren't sure of directions. However, we lost them after a busy intersection.
Two minutes later, a van we assumed to be our tail pulled in behind us, and we continued. Eventually, M took a peek at the van behind us and said to our boss, who was driving,
"K, that's not the van from the other program, it's full of white people!"
(Most of the employees in the company are black or hispanic, I'm the only white person in my program.)
This of course prompted me to yell "White people?! Behind us?! Drive, man, drive!!!" After a short pause I threw in "Sorry, I've always wanted to say that." very quietly. :-)
After a short silence, everyone cracked up, which is good.
Since about 10PM or so, I've felt a little burned out and down, it's probably just the result of an emotionally draining and physically tiring two weeks. So long as nobody else gets engaged, married, pregnant, newly romantically involved or gives birth for a week or so, I should be just dandy.
I really need this weekend, must stave off burnout.
Harry Potter next week! Squee!
