aribRDM and crew are taking advantage of Battlestar's status on a non-broadcast network to hit levels of controversy they wouldn't be able to touch on broadcast/syndicated TV.
In the first three episodes they've dealt with insurgency, occupation, suicide bombings, puppet governments, kidnapping, killing a spouse (and why do I feel like Ellen's gonna be back?) and the biggest Kamikaze run ever.
As much as some aspects of the first arc have done the equivalent of "hitting the reset button," characters have been irrevocably changed. In my professional opinion (I just love saying that!), both Tigh and Starbuck have been completely frakked up, and will need years to recover. Somehow, Dr. Cottle doesn't strike me as the therapy type, though...
