Ours is the only mainstream religion that forbids work on a certain day, as opposed to really preferring that you not do that. I've had Christian coworkers before who thought that Shabbat was like Sunday is for them -- yeah, you do religious stuff, but that doesn't stop you from going out to a movie afterwards, or to work, or whatever.
Which doesn't mean that your boss isn't an idiot, given the number of times you've explained things to him... it's just taking way too long to get this distinction through his head, it seems.
